Why I'm the Only Named Inventor at Mickai

A direct answer to the questions people actually ask me about the patents, the funding, and who really runs this alongside me.

People ask me three things once they have looked closely at Mickai. Why does my name appear alone as the inventor on every one of its patent filings. Why has the company never taken outside investment. And when I describe Mickai as a solo operating model, what does that actually mean, given that other people are clearly running large parts of it. All three are fair questions from anyone doing proper diligence, and I would rather answer them directly than let people guess.

One Name on 104 Filings

Mickai LTD has filed 104 UK patent applications, covering 2,340 claims between them. I want to be precise about the word filed, because it is not the same as granted. None of these applications have been granted by the UK Intellectual Property Office. They are filed and under examination, and I say that plainly rather than letting anyone assume otherwise.

I am the sole named inventor on all of them. The reason is simple rather than strategic. I designed the core architecture of the system myself, over several years, before anyone else was involved in the company. Patent inventorship records who conceived the technical contribution described in a filing. It does not record who runs the business, who will eventually benefit from it, or who joined afterwards to help build the organisation around it. Abbie, Niall, Matthew, Vivek and Chris all joined once there was a working architecture to govern, engineer further, and take to market. None of them were there when the inventions in those 104 filings were conceived, so none of their names belong on them. If that changes, if any of them contribute something patentable of their own, their name goes on that filing. I am not going to dilute an accurate inventorship record just to make the page look more like a typical venture backed research team, because it was not built like one.

I know a patent estate this size with one inventor's name on it looks unusual, and it is. Most organisations with 2,340 claims across their filings have a rotating cast of named contributors added year on year as teams grow. Mickai does not, because Mickai did not start life as a funded research lab with a team already in place. It started as one engineer's work, and the record reflects that honestly rather than retrofitting names onto it later.

Why No Outside Investors, So Far

Mickai has operated without outside investors up to this point. That is a decision I made, not a shortfall in fundraising.

Building a sovereign intelligence operating system means making architectural decisions that are hard to reverse once outside capital, and the expectations that come with it, are in the room. I wanted the foundational choices, how the system handles data, where control sits, what it refuses to do, made without a term sheet shaping the timeline. Outside investment is not off the table permanently. It is a question of sequencing. I wanted the architecture proven and the governance structure in place first, rather than building both of those things under the pressure of investor milestones.

That choice has a real cost. It is slower than it would have been with a funded team from year one. I have carried the financial and personal risk of this directly rather than spreading it across a cap table, and I am not pretending that is purely a strength. It is a trade-off, and I made it with my eyes open.

What "Solo" Actually Means in Practice

When people hear that I am the sole named inventor and that Mickai has not taken outside investment, they sometimes assume I am running the whole company by myself. That is not accurate, and I do not want the shorthand to stand uncorrected.

Mickai has a six person leadership team. Abbie Youdale is Managing Director. Niall Ogilvy is Chief Governance Officer. Matthew Chubb is Chief Technology Officer. Vivek Shah is Chief Business Officer. Chris Williams is Chief Business Development Officer. I am founder and CEO. Each of us holds a distinct area of accountability. Abbie runs the organisation day to day. Niall owns governance. Matthew owns engineering delivery. Vivek and Chris carry the business and commercial side between them. I hold overall direction and the original architecture described in the patent filings.

Solo operating model describes the ownership structure and the inventorship record, not the number of people doing the work. Six of us run this. One of us happens to be the only inventor of record on the patents, because of when they were conceived, not because the other five do not matter.

What I Would Say to Someone Still Sceptical

If you are still sceptical, I understand. A privately held company with one named inventor, no outside investors, and a leadership team most people have not heard of is an unusual profile, and I would rather you notice that than have it slide past unquestioned.

Here is the context I can offer honestly. Before Mickai, I spent years in engineering roles at Sellafield and the UK Atomic Energy Authority, work that involved exactly the kind of rigour around safety and control that still informs how I think about a system like this one. I also co-founded Collector Crypt, which processed over a billion dollars in on-chain transaction volume, so this is not my first time building something from nothing and carrying the responsibility for it personally. None of that makes the current structure at Mickai normal. It just explains why I was comfortable building it this way, and why I am comfortable telling you exactly how it works rather than smoothing it into something more familiar.
