CSRD After the 2026 Omnibus: Fewer Datapoints Still Need an Assured Evidence Trail

The 2026 Omnibus cut mandatory CSRD datapoints by roughly 61 percent and lifted the reporting threshold, but the sustainability figures that survive still need an audit ready evidence trail. With Gaia, our sovereign sustainability studio, a ready made application that computes emissions and drafts disclosures inside one system, you calculate Scope 1, 2 and 3 against curated factor packs and generate that limited assurance trail on your own hardware. The result: the labour moves in house instead of into annual ESG platform fees, so the meter you were paying per seat and per subscription stops.

What the CSRD Omnibus 2026 changed

The Omnibus I Directive entered into force on 18 March 2026, published in the Official Journal as Directive (EU) 2026/470. Industry reporting puts the cut to mandatory ESRS datapoints at roughly 61 percent, from over 1,000 down to around 320. The scope threshold rose to companies with at least 1,000 employees and 450 million euro in net turnover, which analysts estimate removes a large share of the entities first caught by the rule, and a new value chain cap limits the data that larger reporters can demand from smaller suppliers.

The point that gets lost in the relief: fewer datapoints is not the same as no reporting. Large EU and non EU groups above the raised thresholds still owe a narrower but real disclosure, and it still has to stand up to limited assurance. The number of figures fell. The obligation to trace each one back to its source did not.

What ESG reporting costs you today

Most sustainability teams reach the deadline by stacking subscriptions on top of consultant days. A disclosure workspace charges per seat and per year. A carbon accounting tool charges per emissions calculation or per data ingest. A separate emission factor library sits behind its own annual licence. Then the consultants arrive to reconcile the lot before the assurance provider does.

Here is the mechanism that hurts. Each of those meters runs whether or not your footprint changed. When the Omnibus trimmed the datapoints, the platform bills did not fall in step, because you pay for the seats and the subscription, not for the datapoints you no longer file. You were left paying the same recurring fee to report less.

How Gaia builds the numbers on your own hardware

Gaia is our sustainability studio. It computes Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions against curated factor packs, rolls up the ESG metrics, drafts the CSRD disclosure narrative and seals the working to the Open Audit Record, the signed record every AI action is written into. It runs offline on your own hardware, so your energy data, supplier data and travel data never leave the building. The Assistant runs on the company's own brain, built on the company's own data, which is why the work that used to be a platform subscription becomes a function you simply own.

  • Load activity data locally: energy meters, fleet fuel, purchased goods, business travel and supplier records, ingested on device with nothing sent to a vendor cloud.
  • Match each activity to a curated emission factor pack, with the factor and its source shown next to every figure.
  • Compute Scope 1, 2 and 3, then roll the results into the ESRS metrics that remain mandatory after the Omnibus.
  • Draft the disclosure narrative straight from the numbers, ready for review and sign off by your own team.
  • Seal every input, factor and calculation step into the Open Audit Record under post quantum cryptography, so an assurance provider can trace each figure back to its source.

The assurance trail the Omnibus still demands

Limited assurance did not leave with the datapoints. Your assurance provider still has to see how each figure was built, and that is where the annual scramble usually lives. Gaia produces the evidence that supports that examination: a sealed, timestamped record of every input, factor and step, assembled while the work happens rather than reconstructed the week before the audit.

We are careful about the boundary. Gaia gives you a reported footprint with the factors and method shown, not an assured figure. The assurance opinion is the auditor's to give, and the system produces evidence that supports that examination rather than claiming to replace it. What we remove is the cost of rebuilding the trail after the fact, not the auditor's judgement.

What you replace, and what you save

The saving is not a discount on a licence. It is the licence itself, removed. Each tool below is replaced by a function that runs inside one system on hardware you already own, which stops the recurring meter attached to it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2026 Omnibus mean my group no longer has to report?

Only if you now fall below the raised thresholds. The Omnibus lifted scope to at least 1,000 employees and 450 million euro in net turnover, and industry reporting suggests that removes a large share of previously in scope companies. Large EU and non EU groups above those thresholds still report, on a narrower set of datapoints, and still under limited assurance.

Can on device software really produce an audit ready trail?

Yes, and arguably a cleaner one. Because Gaia seals every input, factor and calculation step to the Open Audit Record as it runs, the evidence is built while the work happens rather than reassembled before the audit. Your assurance provider can trace each number to its source without asking you to export from three different platforms first.

What exactly stops being an annual fee?

The per seat and per subscription meters on your ESG platforms, and the consultant day rates for assembling the disclosure. The calculation, the factor packs and the narrative move into software you own and run on your own hardware. The labour stays in house instead of recurring as a platform bill every year the deadline comes round.

Is the footprint Gaia produces an assured figure?

No. Gaia gives you a reported footprint with the factors and method shown, ready for your team to review and for an assurance provider to examine. The assurance opinion remains the auditor's to give. What changes is that the evidence behind every number is already sealed, timestamped and traceable when they arrive.
